I’ve been a small amount of work away from creating a decent portfolio of my artwork for about, oh, say ten years now.  I really don’t know what my deal is, besides just being a self-defeating procrastinator.  Without clear, immediate results, that kind of thing just gets eternally put on the back burner.  But since finding out about the fun comics industry in Minneapolis, I want to defeat the self-defeat really really badly.  One thing about me is that if it’s not for some specific purpose, I never finish things.  I have so much unfinished artwork laying around!  I’m gonna finish some old good ones and make some new finished pieces and create a good portfolio, finally.  I AM GOING TO.  Last night at work I started a new piece, with the sole intent of just being pretty and fun to draw, as well a basic representation of my drawing style and influences.  It’s still a one-night-at-work sketch, but I made my first-ever animated gif showing the stages of it so far, with the sole intent of making an animated gif for the first time.  (You have to click the pic to see the animation.)  The finished picture will be a little goofier than the sketch; she’s gonna be shooting something

That’s another thing I want to do: finally learn all the programs I’ve been meaning to, such as Photoshop (the 75% of it I haven’t fiddled around with yet), Illustrator, and Flash.  The guys I met at the Cartoonist Conspiracy also use font programs (which I’ve fiddled with a little), and stuff like InDesign (which I’ve never even touched).

Also, I want to note that “My Book” has not been forgotten.  It was floating in that realm of Things With No Immediately Foreseeable Result, but I’m going to pick it up again.  I know it’s only been one night so far (long nights at work combined with the internet makes those people seem omnipresent), but I know that surrounding myself with people who make me feel lake a lazy freakin’ ass will be inspirational.  Which makes me feel like crap for my wife, who is my most stalwart supporter and motivator, but gosh darnit, she’s never published a comic book!  Tomorrow’s our 8th anniversary, by the way, and I’m in love with her.

Thanks for looking at this stuff, whoever you may be.

EDIT: Uh, I just realized, after groaning to myself about how hard it is to render toes, that the whole foot is backwards.  I’m just gonna give in to temptation and indulge myself for a moment: “Oh!  The agony of da feet!” Phew…  Sometimes a bad pun fixes everything.  (Speaking of which, “Animated Gif” would be a cool band name.)

A Brisk Autumn Brings Illustration Adventures

Man, I love Fall.  We’ll see how long Lady Minnesota decides to bless us with it this year.  It’s bee a busy couple of weeks— uh, make that MONTHS since my last real post telling anything about our lives.  Some of the teeming thousands of my readers out there may be wondering what became of moving to Canada.  The answer is: We aren’t!  The reason being: we couldn’t get any financial aid.  Neither we or the school we wanted to go to knew about that.  I guess they don’t deal with many American students.  Which is okay.  We just wanted to know if it was the direction our lives should be going after feeling like there were some strong hints in that direction, and we feel content knowing we followed it to the end of the road.  Dana and I are actually very, very happy to still be hanging in Cambridge.

One of the recent things that has been super exciting in my life has been the invitation to be a part of the Minneapolis Cartoonist Conspiracy!  See, my brother knows this great guy named Dave who knows this awesome guy named Clarence who works at a wonderful comic shop in Minneapolis.  Clarence was wonderful enough to mention my name to some other guy who runs a comic book/illustration/animation/graphic design superstudio due to my having blabbed incessantly about how much I’ve been wanting to “break in” to the world of comic book production.  That other guy, a fine chap (name of Zander) invited me (after I called him up to blab incessantly about said stuff) to a monthly meeting of other stand-up fellows who get together and draw.  Stuff.  Like comics.  And talk about video games.  Needless to say, I went, and sat in hog-heaven while other nerds of varying degrees of nerdiness nerded around and drew pictures about nerdy things.

Actually, the 11-or-so people there were really amazing artists and fun conversationalists, all working together on a jointly-created graphic novel in a wide range of drawing styles.  It was cool, too, to see a range of ages represented, from high-school to (perhaps) early 50’s.  they let me jump right in and create a new panel for the book, which I, as of yet, have no idea how it will connect to the whole.  It was really random.  Needless to say, it was one of the funnest times I’ve had in a long time, and I’m excited to continue going there each month.

They also informed me that October 18th (into the 19th) is 24 Hour Comcs Day!!!  Hundreds more nerds amateur and professional illustrators of all sorts will be converging on Minneapolis, as well as other cities around the US, to do a writing and illustration marathon, with each participant rushing to complete a 24-page comic book  in 24 hours!  I can’t wait!  There will probably lots of fairly well-known artists there, and I am really excited to see what kind of stuff people produce.  I’m also very curious to see if I can actually DO it.  That’s a freakin’ long time to draw!  But my mind has been fairly bursting with ideas for what to make, and my irregular days-off sleep schedule has been plagued with nonstop brain-churning that I can’t turn off.  A lot of people who do the marathon just pop out random stuff on the sopt, which is awesome, and I’ve been feeling kind of cheesy wanting to plan something out, but I’ve vowed to myself that I’m not going to put anything down on paper.  My compromise is I can only use whatever I can keep in my head.  We’ll see what happens.  But it’s still over a month away, so I hope I can turn my brain off in the meantime.

Here are a couple of random recent-ish drawings just to get some more stuff up to look at:

I just did these logos for my brother-in-law’s youth group, called ‘TWO12″, which is the boiling point of water.  It comes in two flavors: regular and extra mist-y.
